Telescopic or multi-purpose: which one do you need?

Both reach the same height, both fold away, both are certified. Yet they answer two different problems, and picking the wrong family costs you more than picking the wrong size.

They do not solve the same problem

A conventional telescopic ladder answers a storage and transport constraint. It retracts into itself down to a block of around 80 cm, which fits in the boot of a small car, slides behind a seat or stands upright in a cupboard.

A multi purpose ladder, often called a 4 in 1, answers a versatility constraint. It hinges into four positions: leaning ladder, free standing step ladder, trestle, and scaffold platform once you lay a board across it. It folds away too, but into a block that is shorter, thicker and heavier.

Put another way, the first one optimises bulk, the second one optimises the number of situations it covers. They are not in competition on quality, they are in competition on use.

The telescopic ladder, when storage calls the shots

It is the right choice if you recognise yourself in at least two of these situations.

  • You have neither a garage nor a workshop, and the ladder has to disappear between jobs.
  • You travel in a car, a compact van or a van that is already loaded.
  • Your work is mostly leaning against a wall: gutters, facades, roofing, windows.
  • You climb high, beyond 4 m. This is the family that goes furthest, up to 6.2 m (20.3 ft).

The decisive strength

Section by section extension. You only extend the length you actually need, which makes a tall ladder usable for a small job.

The multi purpose ladder, when the job keeps changing shape

It takes the lead as soon as your jobs stop looking alike from one day to the next.

  • You often work indoors, where there is no usable wall to lean on: ceiling painting, plasterboard fitting, light fittings.
  • You need to stand in a stable position with nothing to lean on, so you need a step ladder.
  • You regularly lay a board between two points to work along a length, on a facade or a ceiling.
  • You have to clear an obstacle at ground level, a staircase or a change of level, where the two feet are not at the same height.

The three questions that settle it

Do I often work without a wall?

If the answer is yes, the matter is settled: you need a multi purpose ladder. A leaning ladder propped against nothing does not exist, and makeshift solutions are exactly how people fall.

Do I climb beyond 4 metres?

If so, the telescopic takes the lead again. It is the family that reaches the greater heights whilst staying transportable, and it is the one that goes up to 6.2 m (20.3 ft).

Where is it going to sleep between jobs?

A trivial question, and yet it is the one that most often decides. A ladder you cannot store ends up outside, in the rain, and ages three times faster. Measure the space before you buy.

"And when someone tells me they have both uses in equal measure, I honestly advise both, in small sizes, rather than one big ladder that will do both badly. It often works out at the same price."

The level of requirement. Both families meet the BS EN 131 standard, carry a certified load of 150 kg all in, and are covered by the same 5 year warranty with European support. The choice is made on use, never on safety.
