Each section locks by itself as it reaches the stop, and a visible indicator confirms it section by section. There is nothing to tighten and nothing to guess: you look, you see, you climb.
The habit worth keeping anyway, the one every tradesperson has: once the ladder is extended and leaning, give it a firm shake at ground level before you put your foot on it.
It is the European standard that governs portable ladders. It requires a series of laboratory tests: strength under load, deflection of the stiles, rung strength, stability and slip on the ground, and resistance of the mechanisms to repeated use.
In practice, a BS EN 131 ladder has been pushed to stresses you will never put it through. It is not a decorative logo, it is a test file. Our whole range meets it, without exception.
150 kg is the certified maximum working load. It is the figure the BS EN 131 standard requires to be verified in a laboratory, and it is the one printed on the ladder's safety label.
It is not the point at which the structure gives way. Under load testing, our ladders are pushed to 300 kg, twice the certified load: the sections stay locked, the stiles do not deform, the ladder does not move.
That margin is not there to be used, and we are not inviting you to use it. 150 kg remains the limit to respect, everything included: your weight, your clothes, your boots, your tools and whatever you carry up with you. It is there so that at 150 kg, on a real job, you are still a long way from the breaking point.
Yes, on two conditions that apply to every ladder. First: fully extend the sections you are using, never stop halfway on a section that is not locked. Second: keep the leaning angle at around 75 degrees, which means the foot sits out from the wall by a quarter of the working height.
On soft, sloping or uneven ground, add a stabiliser bar. That is what widens the base and removes the sideways sway, the thing that worries people most when they climb high.
It covers anything down to manufacturing: a locking mechanism that no longer holds, a section that develops play or jams, an assembly fault. Which is precisely what worries people about a telescopic ladder.
